On Nature of Houses
First House:
The first house, also known as the rising sign, is where the story of life begins. It, in essence, holds the sum total of all the energies of the planets in the chart - it is the context from which all the planets are evaluated.
It is where the overall strengths and weaknesses of the horoscope are indicated, it shows what we are capable of achieving in life. It indicates the center of our energy, our ability to grow or not grow, our life circumstances, our challenges. It shows our surrounding environment and its effect upon us. It is an indicator for our physical body and its basic vitality.
Second House:
The second house is the house of the family, our connection to the family, how we felt growing up and how we feel in the current family environment. It is also the house of wealth and happiness, one's root happiness or emotional outlook. It shows the nature of the personal emotions one developed growing up. It also indicates the mouth, what goes into the mouth - the intake of food and other substances, and what comes out of the mouth - speech and the mechanics of verbal communication.
Third House:
The third house is the house of courage and effort. It also indicates how others support us, our allies, our helpful or harmful neighbors. It is also an indicator of those close to us growing up, namely our brothers and sisters.
It is the house of communication - all forms of communication other than speech, which is indicated by the second house. It is also the house of short term and short distance travel. Physically it relates to the lungs and respiration.
Fourth House:
The fourth house is the house of the home. It shows our comfort level within the home environment and thus our happiness and emotional connection to things outside of ourselves. It indicates what we want to possess, what we want to have in our lives and how we relate to those things. It is an indicator of land and property.
Furthermore, it is the house of education and learning. It also represents the mother. Physically it is an indicator for the heart and the breasts.
Fifth House:
The fifth house is the house of creative intellect and purity of mind. It shows our level of intelligence and capacity for original thinking. It is the house of karmic merits from the past - the past karma being reflected this lifetime. It show our proficiency of using words and thoughts with a certain spiritual power.
It is also the house of discernment and speculation or prediction. Additionally, it is the house of romance, the idea of courting or beginning a friendship. It shows our capacity to have romance and our relationship to the partner. It also represents children. Physically it represents the stomach and intestines.
Sixth House:
The sixth house is the house of disputes and debts. It indicates our hostility and our adversaries, it shows our tendencies toward quarrels, litigation and other legal situations. It indicates our fears and sense of distrust of others as well as our worries about future dealings. It also represents our competitive attitude in the realm of sports.
The sixth is also the house of disease. It shows our tendency toward health difficulties, injuries, accidents and wounds and how we can overcome them. It is also a house of service and discipline, helping others through work and effort.
It indicates pets and cousins. Physically it represents the kidneys.
Seventh House:
The seventh house is the house of connections, how we relate to the world around us, our social nature. In particular, it is the house of partnership, marriage, romantic and long-term relationships. It is an indicator of love and passion. But on the other hand, it is capable of attracting legal disputes.
Being the house furthest from the first house, it shows us our compliment in this life. Furthermore, it is an indicator for long distance travel, both for business and pleasure. Physically is represents the lower abdomen area.
Eighth House:
The eighth house is the house of death and worries. On the one hand it can bring destruction, dishonor and cause us to suffer from chronic health problems, on the other hand it can bring the possibility of wealth from unexpected sources.
Being a house of secrecy it attracts mysticism and occult studies. It indicates the hidden parts of our minds as well, including our criminal tendencies. And shows our capacity to win or lose in litigious disputes.
Furthermore, it indicates our sexual attractiveness and our ability to perform sexually and therefore the sexual organs.
Ninth House:
The ninth house is the house of dharma. It indicates our religious tradition and spiritual disposition, our primary values, the laws of our own nature and our capacity to expand and grow. It is the house of higher wisdom, knowledge and understanding as well as the house of prosperity, good luck and good fortune.
It indicates how and who our guides will be. Those we view as holding positions of authority -- the guru, the teacher and the father. It also represents foreign travel for the sake of pilgrimage and learning. Physically is represents the back and hips.
Tenth House:
The tenth house is the house of karma. It shows our actions in this life and how they effect the world. This is seen through the success of our careers, the position we are able to attain in life. It indicates our skills, talents and achievements of honor in the realm of our business. It also represents our pride and our reputation in our field of expertise. Furthermore it is the indicator for the leader, the king and his assembly. Physically it represents the upper legs and knees.
Eleventh House:
The eleventh house is the house of gains - gains or increases in income, gains of friendships, gains of opportunities. I can also indicate gains of possessions, collections and jewels. It shows us our deepest goals and aspirations, what it is that we desire to have in our lives.
It also represents the elder siblings and the support we get from them as well as the support we may get from our friends and peers. Physically it represents the legs, the left ear and the left hand.
Twelfth House:
The twelfth house is the house of loss. It is the expenditure, decrease and wastage of money, time or energy. It shows where we are limited or confined and therefore what we tend to suffer. It is the indicator of our subconscious desires and hidden emotional needs and can leave us feeling helpless, abandoned and thus out of control. Furthermore, it shows our sorrows, disappointments and fears contributing to a lack of stability.
The twelfth house also represent long journey's or living in foreign places. On the more positive side, it can show us how such difficulties can lead us toward detachment and therefore guide us toward higher levels of consciousness and ultimately spiritual liberation. It also shows our desires to be of service and helpful to others, our tendency toward philanthropic behavior. Physically it represents the feet, toes and left eye.
